GRUB-1.98 configure error while building HLFS SVN-20110128

I am building a Hardened Linux From Scratch system using the latest development version here: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/hlfs/view/development/

The book patches gcc to use -fPIE, -fstack-protector-all, and -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 by default when appropriate.

I have been able to build the system without issue all the way up to Chapter 06 when GRUB-1.98 is to be installed. GRUB's configure script fails.

This is the full output of the configure script:
http://pastebin.com/BVQV7mHb

I'm pretty sure that the checks for __bswapsi2, etc. are connected to the problem.

Here is config.log:
http://pastebin.com/kPFpeDUZ

Again, it seems to be breaking with the checks for __bswapsi2, etc.

And if it's of any help, here's gcc's specdump:
http://pastebin.com/VSHN6KCu

It's properly linking to crt1 rather than Scrt1 when -fno-PIE is flagged, so I'm confused as to how it's not finding _start.

I'm pretty sure that either GRUB's configure script needs to have a patch/sed applied which the book doesn't specify, or that something is utterly wrong with the book's instructions to build the toolchain. I've had no issue building the rest of the book packages, and the glibc/gcc tests returned with acceptable results. It's just GRUB that's giving me this trouble.

If anyone can shed some light on this or has experience building GRUB under this setup, it would be much appreciated.
