got everything working with wine, including rise of nations!!!!

firstly, if you hav'nt got windows 200 or windows XP, don't bother reading this.

I found a way of getting appz and gamez to work with wine.

A bit of background. first.

I was looking for a post on how to get gta vice city to work with wine and I saw a post saying install vice city opn to your windows mount then make a shortcut to your linux desktop.

I did, that worked nicely.

I tryed it with rise of nations, dreamweaver mx 2004 and a few other games.

And, the amasing thing, There all working!

here how to do it:
set up a mount(NFS) for windows on your linux desktop, log in to windows(duel boot) install you app or game replace the old exe(the icon you click to use or play.
make a shortcut of the cracked icon to linux desktop.

I suggest you keep the main files on your windows partition.

install wine(i used version 20040309.tar.gz)

then click on the icon you just made for the app ior game.
it should work!

for rise of nation, don't forget to install it in to program files, keep it there!
just crack it andmake a shortcut(like the above says) to your linux desktop.

oh and wine does worek with mandrake 10 by the way guys!
just compile and install it as normal.

so, please, feel free to try other apps or gam,es this way and post it up on here as a reply...thanks!

one last thing, install your gtraphics drivers on both windows and linux!

don't forget to keep all the main files on windows and to make a shortcut to linux(after you crack the icon) no-cd cracks, i used. for the main reason, incase linux does'nt read the disc, since the main files are still on windows.

succes story of this year.....wine after all, is as useless as some people make out to be!

In details...

Hello,Iron_Roses.Thanks for your invaluable suggestion on using WINE.

Frankly speaking,I hate using WINE because I have a bad experience on using it.However, would you mind telling me how to use WINE and install the Windows programs in details?Because I don't really fully understand what you want me to do.

Thanks. ;)

What is a cracked icon, thats all I need to know.

Kovacs 03-26-2004 09:51 AM

What are you talking about when you say "crack the icon?"

xodustrance 03-26-2004 10:19 AM

lol - he doesnt mean crack the icon silly, he means dl a cracked exe for the game. One problem with your advice, some of us really dont have a single xp partition left, and all of my file systems are ext3 now. And winex 3.3 works perfect with warcraft iii, gta (&vice city), Baldurs gate 2, Max payne, and others that I play regularly. Fun little perk on linux, but I also find that when I got all of these working, I played them as often as I did in windows, almost never. If you have a partition of windows left, use it for your games, and leave Linux to do what it does best. Winex is a crappy experience at best, it just doesnt have the fluid feel like in windows. Now take Descent 3, Tribes, UT2003 & 2004, which are run natively on linux without emulators, and they run perfect. In fact less hiccups then there winodws counterparts. One day, they will market games on pc's like they do with ps2, xbox, and gamecube. 1 may get exclusive rights for 90 - 180 days, then ported to the other 2 systems. Give it time, you will see. Till then if you use a pc for gaming, just use windows. It less trouble to you, and will make your time more productive. Some people would like to use linux, but it just isnt for them. ie gamers. I watch as they spend countless hours trying to get this to work, and that to work... I dont quite understand it...

Bloody hell, Iron Roses. It took me forever to read that post. I strongly suggest that you use the spell check from now on, and for every post, please.
