got a new monitor now 'signal out of range'
 

hello fellow linux users.
i am getting quite good at all this linux malarky and consider myself intermediate rather than newbie now (thank crap because i hate the word newbie!!). but i have run into a very annoying problem that i'm unable to fix myself.
i've just upgraded from 17" crt to 17" tft, and now when i start my fedora core 2 machine up it says 'signal out of range'. presumably it's a refresh rate problem because it's capable of the same resolution.

checked my xorg.conf and it still has values for the old crt monitor, which is terribly unfortunate for me as i don't have the foggiest idea of what my new monitors rates would be for xorg.conf.

isn't kudzu supposed to pick up new hardware or does that not exist in fedora core 2? also is there a configuration program that specifically sets up your xorg.conf automatically?

Ok, this should be basic, do you have your monitor's manual? If you do all you have to do is get it out, look at the refresh rates and then type, I believe, nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf, as root in text mode. Then keep going down the page until you find where it says HorRefresh Rate and Vert. Then simply substitute the information in those fields with the information provided from your montior. Then press ctrl-x andsave the data. This should fix your problem.

i believe that my kind distributor robbed me of the manual and the disk before it ever crossed my door, however i will try and find my monitor's model online and try what you said.

i'd still like to know if there's actually a utility from the command-line that re-detects monitors/graphics cards though.. if possible.

As root user...
Try the command: /usr/sbin/ddcprobe to get the horizontal and vertical rates.
