good video and music player

coming from windows I keep in mind how good winamp was.
now I have xmms on my suse but I could find some problems I don't really like...

first of all, xmms skips the video files in the directory.
with winamp I could both listen to music and watch videos.
then all "special" characters aren't displayed.
with that I mean é è ì ò à ù ä ö ü are missing...

are there some plug-ins for xmms or other softwares like the last windows' winamp version?

thank you!
:)

I use mplayer for video............and
all my music files are in .Ogg format..........mplayer see these perfectly and
plays them without errors.............

So does xine. For music, there used to be a "freeamp". I don't know if it still exists...

I've tried to use Xine but I had some problems... is it possible to load into a playlist all the files in a folder?
just an Add Dir as so many players have?
I cannot insert every file manually... it would be crazy!

and for mplayer I've seen I need 2 libraries.. libXv.so and libtermcap.so
I just don't know where to get them!

I've been using mplayer for video and xmms for audio. I love how xmms is set up and would use that exclusively except for the fact that it doesn't play video.

What I hate about mplayer is the way it has its playlist is set up. I can't seem to find a way to see the playlist and double-click items I want to see like I can in xmms. I have to add the items in an options box, and then somehow remember everything I've added while watching. There's got to be an easier way! Any ideas? Ideally, xmms would play video and audio and I would stick with that...

libXv.so problem

I went to http://rpm.pbone.net/ which is a very nice site for finding where certain files are found. typing libXv.so resulted in
the package: xorg-x11-devel-6.8.1-12.i386.rpm.

Are you not running X or something?? not finding libXv.so is weird and is out of my range of ability. Sorry...

If you get the codecs, Mplayer will do just about anything,
even mp3.
There are several frontends available. (not just skins)
Some have different or even better function than the Mplayer gui.
Look here:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/projects.html

I put all my extra codecs in /usr/lib/win32.
(win32, qt6, qtextras, and even rp9)
This is where most players will look, Mplayer will find them there
as well.

I'm a KDE user and have been using the KPlayer front end with
good success, especially resize and full screen.

mplayer fronts is what you want!

mplayer can play almost any video/audio (even mp3 as some videos do use mp3 for audio)

tho, there are mplayer plugins for xmms if thats what you want .... see the xmms site
