Our webservers are at a data center, and since our small ISP's SMTP server has been flaky on us recently, they're telling us we're better off setting up our our mail server on our private network. We don't do tons of email--this would mainly be for emailing us log stuff from various programs that get run on the web app and database servers. Some of the more important emails that go out are notifications for customers, and while there aren't that many of them, they are very important to us.
We don't have any mail server experience in house, but we do have a Red Hat server we can spare to load something on, and I was looking at qmail:
I suppose some of these steps are optional--like I said, we don't need any webmail clients or anything like that. A lot of the emailing would be going to outside addresses, and then we would probably have one or two email addresses whose mail would actually be stored on the server, and I would probably write a little Java program to access those with POP (to auto-load some data our business partners would be sending us).
So, in a nutshell I'm looking for something really easy to install that will do these basic things for us. Any suggestions?
