Good antivirus for checking winxp partition?

I was wondering if there is any GOOD antivirus to run from my fedora core 2 linux partition so i can check my winxp partition for viruses?????

You can try wine-ing some antivirus. I dont know if you can really do this, but I have managed to wine a simple antivirus called "Stinger" from McAfee. It searches for only a few network viruses.

I can't say about the success rate of detecting a windows virus while working in Linux environment.

Braveheart1980 08-20-2004 07:50 PM

Just found the panda antivirus link i was looking for ( http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/linux/linux.asp ) !

Is there maybe a good antivirus to scan win partitions WITH a nice gui?

PS How do i update the panda antivirus? The one on the site is dated 02/2004!

If you find one, let me know.

Remember this is free stuff.

I don't know how or if the free Linux Panda is updated. You may need to check the release and reinstall.

McAfee offers Linux Anitivirus. I think you need to pay for it........

There's this virus scanner in knoppic I read. F-prot or something, is it good?

johnmart 08-22-2004 01:10 PM

Hi, I used Avast AV free version in winxp, I recently noticed that they offer a linux version but I haven't tried it, but also I think it's for pay. Good luck!

blitzen 08-22-2004 08:14 PM

Fprot on knoppix? That sounds cool!

i've been reading on the security forum and i've found out that clamav is a good antivirus, that is use on e-mail servers, that software scans for windows virus, so does f-pro which comes with knoppix, I also know there is another antivirus software from avg, go to grisoft.com to check it out. I haven't tried it mysefl, and i don't know if it's for free.

avast home edition is a good windows AV program. why dont you use that? if not, then using knoppix is hte best idea. get to know the interface just in case you ever have to remove a windows virus that isnt a dualboot machine.
as for using a prog in wine, id recommend AVG over Avast as avast uses alpha-blending and you probably will have compatibilty problems. as for a AV prog in xp, avast is better.

Remember that alot are designed for linux mail servers only.

F-prot

I installed F-Prot on my Mdk 10.1. I did a scan on all harddrives and it even found a few potential problems on my windows folder from linux that Panda in Windows never found. I usually update it every day.

Where in FProt on Knoppix?

keep hearing knoppix comes with FProt. i don't see it in the k menu so i assume it has to be installed. how do i go about finding it to do this?

r0jaws 07-03-2005 04:59 PM

have to say I use bit defender console, a command line scanner, simple to use, free, regular updates, found more viruses on my old xp partition than either, AVG and Norton, cleaned them up nicely too!
simple as,
bdc --update (to update virus definitions)
bdc --all / (to scan whole computer or define which directories)
Can be found
here
hope this is what you're after :)
