Gnome works but not with startx command

here is the history-- upgrade gnome it worked fine, changed video cards to Riva TnT and its a no go-- xconfigurator did not help, uninstalled/reinstalled XF86, xserver and drivers, now X works but not with a windows manger, I can start Gnome with /etc/X11/ ./prefdm and it works great, when i type startx it hangs and gives error " xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error. " can someone help me out-- its Redhat 7.0 with many lib updates -- i have thought about making startx an alias of ./prefdm but i want to fix the problem here
