GNOME taskbar entry size...

I use GNOME, which I am generally happy with. The only problem I can find is that, it squishes up my taskbar buttons, seemingly randomly. For example, if I have one window open, it will take up about 2/3 of the taskbar, but if I open another, both will be squished into about 1/8th of the bar! It's incredibly annoying. Is there any way to change it to always use up the whole taskbar, like the taskbar in XFCE4? This could decide which desktop environment I use...

Have I really gotten to the stage where all my questions are too advanced to be answered by other LQ users? I doubt it...
