Gnome sound problem

when using Gnome, enabling system sounds causes all sounds to "loop". Such as the startup.wav will continue to play endlessly until I disable system sounds.

I have tried KDE sounds and no problem noted there and playing of cd's or mp3's through other means all works fine.

Any advice appreciated
