Gnome panel without desktop

Does anyone know how to get the Gnome panel without the desktop? I want to have the openbox3 root menu to start applications.

I tried running gnome-panel and it mostly works but some applets give CORBA exception errors if I run gnome-panel outside of a GNOME session.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the kind of error I'm getting:

The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_WorkspaceSwitcherApplet"
Details: Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0'
