Gnome-netstatus problems

Has anyone here had any problems with gnome-netstatus? I've compiled it, along with Gnome, but it doesn't seem to function properly for me under Gentoo, even though I seem to remember having it work when I was using Slack.... When it does work (like today when I had some mysterious net problems, turns out ifconfig didn't bring up either eth0 or lo), it worked for less than a minute (and ~344KB), before it said that eth0 was disconnected.

I'm using IPv4, after thinking IPv6 could be the problem, and I've recompiled gnome-netstatus along with quite possibly all of Gnome, and also the kernel (for disabling ipv6.) Any suggestions? It seems to think lo is working fine, and I'm out of ideas. I've tried using a static IP and using DHCP, but neither seem to be working. Any & all help would be appreciated.
