gnome desktop icons

I work at a network control facility and we have some locations that have multiple users able to login to a linux box running 7.2

they all have their own gnome desktop settings and for some users their desktop icons keep disappearing and they have to reset them. the files old files are in ~/.gnome launchers dir but they do not get touched upon login the /home dir is mounted on a netfiler server as well, anyone have any ideas (there are no dup uid either)

also --> the orbit user directories keep getting their permissions changed to 777 instead of 700 thus not allowing users to login, the dir is in /tmp .. orbit-<username>, any ideas what the heck could be doing this??? (no crons touch tmp, no dup uids, no mask changes)

thanks guys
