Gnome Desktop display won't work

Gnome Desktop menu items such as "System Settings>Server Settings>Samba" and "System Settings>Add/Remove Applications" will not display. The OS is FC4.

This happened after installing Mysql on the machine. These menu items displayed before the Mysql installation. The symptom is simply that the hourglass mouse pointer is momentary and reverts back to its normal state. There is some disk activity until the mouse pointer reverts. I am running under root in all cases. The Samba server is running - Windows machine can read and write files. The Apache HTTP server is also running - Windows machines can view html files. I can't tell if the Mysql database is functioning, altho PHP seems to be working.

So I suspect this is some finger problem, but I can't tell what. I stopped sendmail - no mail travels here. I can't think of what else I may have stopped/started or installed/removed in the course of installing the Mysql database.

Regards
Lou.

Hmmm...

Like anyone, I'm sure we're wondering about running in root. This can lead to any number of obscurely overwritten files. No syslog info? Next, I'd start with checking loopback and so on w/ netstat, route, etc, if you haven't already. Not much to go on in your post without logging information. Seems like your command line is your friend right now.
