Gnome 3 forced fallback mode cannot be changed...

I've had Ubuntu 11.10 installed for about 5 months now, and I decided to install the Gnome 3 desktop, being very fed up by Unity. Once I did, I realized it was very different from what I saw in the screen shots, and that's when I saw I was on "fallback mode"
Apparently in System Info>Graphics there is a button to change that, but mine doesn't even give me the option!
I have an nVidia gt 555m graphics card with bad Linux compatibility, so I'm running the basic integrated Intel 3000 graphics in my processor, which should be more than enough for the 3d graphics acceleration Gnome 3 requires.
Should I install some extra driver? is my Gnome installation corrupt?

I have two Fedora systems which I upgrade from F14 to F16. One I finally got to come out of fallback and into the full experience. There seems to be many reasons why Gnome forces a system into fallback, and unfortunately it is poorly documented (at least I cannot find such a document) and there appears to be no way of having Gnome log the decisions it makes to force one into fallback mode.

From my experience and readings here are some reasons why fallback mode is forced:

1. When one upgrades from a previous version of Fedora, often the gnome-shell is not installed. Check to see if there is a gnome-shell installed.
2. Sometimes the driver automatically chosen for your graphics card is not optimal and Gnome forces fallback mode.
3. I have seem some reports that gnome-tweak-tool needs to be installed.

Problem kind of solved...
 

Well, after trying to boot into Ubuntu this morning, the whole thing failed, so I ended up having to reinstall, but this time I resorted to linux mint, which uses my integrated graphics (Intell graphics 3000) which is fine by me! The desktop is fine and I guess the solution was just not to even use the graphics card, which had poor driver compatibility even in Windows...
