[SOLVED] Gnome 3 and the desktop

I am untidy, my desktop is cluttered, the one I sit at, and the computer desktop. But not with Gnome 3: I used to put all kinds of files on my desktop, photos, docs, folders. In Gnome 3 I can't do that. I have a folder /Desktop, with somethings in it, but nothing shows on the visible desktop.
Say the zip file of 3 photos I just downloaded to /Desktop. Only if I use the file browser and open /Desktop can I see it.

Why can't I put things on the screen I have, when no window is open??

You can. Install gnome-tweak-tool, and set 'Have file manager manage the desktop'.
