hei all

can anybody tell waht´s the diference between "platform" and "desktop" on downloading gnome 2.8 souces on www.gnome.org? i dow know which to download.

And files? there are any order to compile?

The "Platform" is the base libraries and tools that developers would use to write GNOME applications. The "Desktop" is the software that end-users would use.

You don't need to manually download and compile GNOME, though. There are a couple of build systems that automate the process for you. GARNOME builds from the officially released source files, whilst jhbuild gets files straight from CVS.

Note that GNOME 2.8 needs hal, dbus etc. installed on the system for the new volume management to work, and the build systems can't do this for you. So you'll probably still have to mount disks the old-fashioned way on your new GNOME 2.8 build.
