Gnome 2.6 - "spatial" file manager options
If anyone has tried the new Gnome-2.6 and hates the spatial windows that nautilus uses, there is a fix already installed in the new Gnome 2.6. All you need to do is this
open gconf editor-->apps-->nautilus--->preferences--->and check "always use browser" nautilus will behave like it did in Gnome 2.4. Anyway, just thought someone may want to know this. |
Thanks for that, you can open the browser by right clicking and selecting "Browse Folder". I am getting used to the default now and I actually quite like it. It remembers window positions, layout and sizes, also it just raises an already open folder if you click on its icon. Good if you generally use mc for working with files and just use nautilus for docs and multimedia files.
One thing that does annoy me though is that it no longer previews (makes snapshot type icons) my .avi and .mpg files like it used to. Is there any way of getting that back? |
I like to have the choice without right clicking so I set up a launcher which opens my home folder with the command nautilus --browser /home/andy and it opens like nautilus used to. But for two other folders (music and source tarballs) I've set up launchers without the --browser option as I like the spatial thing of them remembering their position. Nautilus 2.6 is faster opening these folders too. If you use the "always use browser" option described above you don't get the choice.

What I find annoying is that unless I switch the "always use browser" option on, nautilus will open a new window everytime I a folder. Unless I'm blind, there doesn't seem to be an option for it to reuse the same window. The only work around I know is to hold the shift key while clicking or using the middle mouse button. It seems stupid that this option is not available. Anyone know of a fix?

It's not a bug, it's the way it works. Use the browser if you want one window browsing
ps. I deleted my ~/.gconf ~/.gconfd ~/.gnome ~/.gnome2 ~/.gstreamer-0.8 ~/.metacity ~/.nautilus and ~/.thumbnails and started again. It all works fine now. [see my previous post on thumbnails] |
