gnome 2.4 missing fonts and such

howdy all. I have made a mini custom linux distro thing and previously had icewm as the window manager and it worked perfectly. I have now attempted to switch over to gnome 2.4 and while i have compiled everything it says to in the documentation, gnome runs but has a few little problems such as:

* text is just non-existant, icons are there (3 icons on desktop), but no text below and the icons are just the blank page icon

* menus show up but are about 10x wider than they should be, and have no text or icons. dialogue boxes also show up without any text and 10x wider. nautilus however seems to show up the right size, has icons, but the layout is all wrong and no text.

* the panel is about 10 pixels high and 60 wide, and starts up the top left of the screen - it is movable though. it has no icons on it, but has 2 buttons - one on each side which if i play around with random menus they sometimes turn to arrows.

basically i'm really wanting to fix the non-existant text problem because hopefully that's what is breaking everything else. other than that, everything generally seems to work such as dragging icons around, creating icons (if i somehow choose the right menu option), etc. is there a secret library i'm missing? anyone else had a similar problem?

Just took some photos to show what I mean...

This is the first message I get...ignore the warning because i'll fix it later but it shows text and icons somehow...

This is all that is on the screen when gnome starts...no splash screen shows, just the warning above, then this desktop.

Top window is nautilus. Bottom is a dialog box. Each was opened via the icons on the desktop.
