GMail Notifier

I am using Gmail to deliver SMSs to cellphone users.

Email arrives at Gmail account.

Crontab runs my script every minute and so the script is run, new messages are downloaded, parsed and sent via SMS using an engine I built.

It seems wasteful to have a script that runs every minute of every hour of every day.

Is there a Gmail app that runs in text mode that keeps an active connection to Gmail and can launch my script anytime new mail arrives?

Or something like that?
