Did you remove the Mesa libs as the Nvidia install should have done? Have reference to GLX in XFree86.conf? Loaded "nvidia" driver instead of "nv"? What RenderDevice are you using in UT? If you have different libs like I have then in Unrealtournament.ini put a line like "OpenGLLibName=/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.2960" (this one matches the old Nvidia 2960 version for example) under [SDLGLDrv.SDLGLRenderDevice] or [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice] may help.
Also, if you execute "export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose", and then run glxinfo again, what does it say?

Is glx enabled in /etc/X11/XF86Config? Look through it, then uncomment GLX if it's commented, then restart X server and try again, if it still doesnt work make sure you are running the latest drivers since old ones have some nasty bugs.

I already adapted the ini file from UT
What I have done:

got tarballs of nvidia.com
compiled and installed them

Adapted XF86config-4 as said in the README

restart X
got a nice screen of NVIDIA
but then the trouble started:
no 3d games went
GLXgears gives following output
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

Glxinfo as in first post
though went looking what modules XF loaded, there clearly states:
glx
NVIDIA-GLX
and so on

also thx for wanting to help
