glibc_2.4 not found?? can't install software!!!

I'm building a customized version of slax from Slax Frodo, but there's not much software that I can install because most of the time, this error message appears:
/lib/tls/libc.so.6: version 'GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by [xyz software])
There's a slax module available for the newer version of glibc, so i inserted it, but still nothing. I was told to build software from source to avoid this problem, but whenever i build from source, i get a message saying something along the lines of "C compiler cannot create executeables"

I'm pretty sure that this is a linux problem, and not a slax-specific problem. If anyone can offer any insight, it would be great!
