Exclamation Gimp - Unable to scan in xsane. works as stand-a-lone.

Using Fedora 11 i386

Have a Canon pixma MX-310. Have successfully got it printing with CUPS and can successfully scan using scanimage. Able to scan both as root and as an individual.

Problem unable to do xsane and to scan with GIMP. Always reports unable to find scanner attached. Yet, scanimage -V reports
scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.20; backend version 1.0.20

scanimage -L
device `pixma:04A91728_15D58F' is a CANON Canon PIXMA MX310 multi-function peripheral

scanimage -T

scanimage: reading one scanline, 1920 bytes... PASS

But when execute xsane, scanner not found.

Package xsane-gimp-0.996-7.fc11.i586 already installed and latest version
Package xsane-0.996-7.fc11.i586 already installed and latest version

[root@localhost Download]# rpm -iv sane-frontends-1.0.14-6.fc11.i586.rpm

package sane-frontends-1.0.14-6.fc11.i586 is already installed
[root@localhost Download]# rpm -e sane-frontends-1.0.14-6.fc11.i586.rpm
error: package sane-frontends-1.0.14-6.fc11.i586.rpm is not installed

I also have the latest frontend load and installed according to yum.

Thanks for all assistance.

I can't even make a wild guess. But have you started xsane from the command line so you can see any messages produced by xsane?

Yes, at the cl I type xsane and the program goes out and looks for the scanner and can not find it. Tried as user and as root.

Am able to scan as a user or root using scanimage > filename.jpeg. And then edit it using GIMP. Go figure.

I am a bit reluctant to ask because it seems that you know fairly well what you are talking about. Sorry if I offense you, but if you look at the xsane man page, there are some option given to specify a device, did you try to specify an explicit device.

Also there are a number of xsane related rc files, did you check those, and possibly delete them so xsane would rebuild them from scratch? There is also a environment variable mentioned which states the scanner type, did you check that one?

If this all doesn't solve, I am out of ideas, sorry.

I would simply run the scanner SW independently of GIMP. There are a variety of GUI front ends (for SANE, I assume), and they have typically worked well for me.
