Gimp tutorials

I've seen very beautiful images made with the Gimp. I want to try it, but everything seems very complicated.. layers, channels.. Do you know web sites that have tutorials for image-making? Can you give me some quick tips for the Gimp?

P.S. I searched gg and found some sites with tutors But I won't deny some useful advices that you might give me

best advices:
1. launch gimp and play around, there's nothing better than this ÷)
2. browse the help for layers and channels, and play around, try it
3. read through the startup tips, really helpful
4. visit some sites (http://tigert.gimp.org/gimp/tutorials/, blabla)

Once you got the idea of layers, try writing some text onto a solid color blackground, and try all the 'efffects' and 'script-fus' on the text to see what happens

Yep, play with it.......I found an incredible feature by doing this......Gimp can take a wallpaper or any flat .jpg or .png and turn it into a Globe and animate it to spin!!
