GIMP tool question

OK, here's the deal: I'd like to take the avatar I'm currently using on another forum and add it to a banner. My only problem is that the background for my avatar isn't transparent, so I can't just copy and paste.

How can I make the background transparent and keep the image subject?

Does this question make any sense at all, or am I just rambling?

P.S. Here's the avatar image I'm using.

In case you're wondering about it, I was recently promoted to modship there.

You shoudl be able to open it then use the feather tool to seleck the back ground then just press crtl+K to clear the selection.
