GIMP scaling of rectangular pix

I have a pix in my wallpaper collection that is rectangular vertically and when it is
displayed it fills the screen and the image is distorted. How do I make it so that it
will be displayed full screen, but in the same dimensions of the original? It is of a
person and it looks really strange when it is displayed. I tried to use GIMP help, but
it wouldn't open.
I am using Mandrake 9.2 and I am not sure of the GIMP version, tho it should be
very recent.

Thanks

In your KDE control center, you probably have 'scaled' turned on for your background. This will stretch it to fit the screen. Under mode, select 'centered'

By rectangular vertically I take it you mean that it is laid out in portrait and you'd like it in landscape so it will fit on your screen? If you don't want to rotate it through 90 degrees you'll need to use the Gimps Crop & Resize tool to cut it to the shape you want and then use that section to fill the screen.

Thanks for the info re: GIMP

Thanks, I will give it a try. What I was talking about above is a portrait format that I
do not really want to fill the screen, I just want it to display normally vertically and there
can be dead space on either side of the pix. I do have my KDE set for scaled and it works
for most of my pix, but this one because its format is different is distorted when scaled to
whole screen. When I put it on centered, the pix is so small that I an hardly see it. I will
try the resizing in GIMP.
Thank again for your time and help.:)

Sorry I didn't understand your original post. I thought you wanted the picture to cover the whole screen without being streatched to fit. I use Gnome and didn't realise KDE won't display a picture in portrait and leave a space on either side. It may be possible to use the GIMP to add sections to the side of the picture, perhaps a suitable colour, so that it will display the way you want.
