GIMP + painting white transparent

I have an image (It can be viewed at my website - it is the logo that says QuickFRY), and I want to change the white to transparent. I created an alpha-layer, selected the white using the magic want, and hit ctrl + x. In the process of doing so, this removed fry's head (Yes, Fry from Futurama) Can anyone show me how to properly use the GIMP so I can make the white transparent? Thanks :-)

The magic wand tool has a threshhold setting. If it's set higher, then values other than what you have selected are included in the set. Check that, set lower (or to zero).
