Gimp - jpg - unknown file type

I am trying to open a .jpg file in Gimp 2.0.2 (slackware package). When I try, it gives me a box that says it's an unknown file type, and if I try to save it it says the same thing (JPG isn't even in the list). I can see the image in xv so I know it's a good file. Am I missing a library or something?

you should recompile the gimp source with the jpg support enabled
