gimp jpegs dont open in windows

Jpegs I made with gimp 1.3 do not open on a windows 98 machine. Same for tiffs. The error message is 'not a valid format'. Is this M$ being nasty or am I doing something wrong? The original captures were made with xsane. Would gimp have been better?

for windows to "see" these pics, make sure you re-name them to .jpg
I have windows configured to make use of the -----.png extension also.

That's not the problem. They were renamed.
