gimp-gutenprint no output

hi
I have compiled and installed gutenprint-5.2.7 on slackware 12.1 and 13.0 and am trying to make the plugin work for gimp 2.4 or 2.6 as the driver for a canon ip4820. Its only function will be as a dedicated photo printer. Consequently setting it up via cups as a general purpose printer is of no interest.

The installation went with no hitches that I am aware of but when I attempt to print a photo the progress indicator moves from start to end and the data moves through the lprng print queue but nothing shows up at the printer - /dev/usb/lp0

Here are the relevant settings:
Gimp-gutenprint
printer canon ip4800
printer queue canon
standard cmd lp -s -d canon -oraw
or without -oraw

printcap:
lp|lexmark:lp=:if=/usr/bin/foomatic-rip:rm=jim.asd.home.ca:sd=/var/spool/lpd:sh
#
# try to print on ip4820
#canon:lp=/dev/usb/lp0:if=/usr/bin/foomatic-rip:sd=/var/spool/lpdcanon:sh
canon:lp=/dev/usb/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpdcanon:sh
Tried with and without foomatic

As a matter of interest, If the data is directed to the lp it prints fine on the lexmark laser which is a postscript embedded printer reached via a lan

Also, the problem is not hardware because the printer works fine on the same computer using XP with canon provided software.

It had occurred to me that the problem might be that a ppd was not specified but it is my understanding that gutenprint as a plugin does not require one (which is just as well because I searched the whole disk and could not find one for the ip4800 nor could one be found on the internet).

I hope someone can help me with this, because I haven't been doing too well by myself.

Thanks in anticipation

after you built gimp-print
did you then add --with-gimp-print to the configure line when you built gimp ?

however autotools should have found the *.pc file and auto added it to gimp when you built gimp

not so fast ....

cannon is VERY FAMOUS for NOT supporting Linux

just because it works on XP dose NOT mean it will work on Linux

is there a cups entry for that cannon printer ?

if your current set up works on the lexmark then it is a driver issue
as in the cannon printer might not be supported by cannon on linux

First - thank your for your attention.

Next: I didn't build gimp print I built gutenprint 5.2.7. Not sure that this has any significance.

I quite agree with you and knowing what I do now would not have purchased the canon device. However, we must live with our failures. On the other hand it does produce very nice prints.

Next item. I am trying to avoid cups but have cups 1.2.11 loaded in another partition (e.g. slackware 12.0) but as regards your question: "is there a cups entry for that cannon printer" have no idea how to address this question. However, my hunt in the internet has suggested that the gutenprint plugin does not need cups. But I would welcome any suggestions that a) I am wrong or B) that there are other threads to follow. Regardless, I did a search of the cups package and found no ppd files.

Finally, I agree that it is a driver issue. But what kind and how to continue?
regards
jm

might work ?
http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010893.asp

or run XP for the printer

wow they actually have a mac driver

you "might " git the Windows gimp and the windows print driver to run in "wine" ( with 1/2 of win 7 installed )
but probably not

Thank you for the references. However, they don't address my problem. I am only interested in making the printer work with gimp-gutenprint.

I am pretty sure that the problem is in the command protocol produced by gutenprint. Here is the head end -

[[KB@@_BJLSTART
ControlMode=Common
AckTime=Short
BJLEND
[[KB@@_BJLSTART
ControlMode=Common
MediaDetection=ON
BJLEND
[[KB@@O[(bA@A[(qA@A[(dD@BXB ....etc

I have been unable to identify this protocol nor to discover what the ip4820 is expecting.
Any help here would be appreciated.

regards

A little more on BJL. It appears to be a prorietary canon control language. I have found a reference to Canon Bubble Jet Programmers Manual which might be of some use, but cannot find anthing about it on the net.
