And libtiff-tools and friends are installed? Most times I'll use a2ps and open the .ps file with gimp when encountering odd issues in gimp. But tiff should be mostly supported IMO (when the needed parts exist).

what sort of file are you trying to open?
is it actually a tiff image?

have you checked with
Code:
file someimage.tiff
?
what did you get? post output.

have you checked with some other image viewer etc. if the file can be opened, isn't corrupt?

ondoho's suggestions are excellent.

Can the file in question be made available for testing?

That error is typical when trying to open a raw file. There are many add-ons available for the gimp and plenty of documentation on line to learn. Installing dcraw (raw decoder) gives gimp the ability to work with raw files, there may be other decoders it can use.

the only tiff's i use these days are 32 bit floating point and 16 bit signed and unsigned grayscale images

and gimp 2.8.18 CAN NOT open these

now Gimp 2.9.4 DEVELOPMENT can
and so can krita ( maybe? )
and Gmic
imagemagick Q16 and Q32 can

what kind of tif is it ?
i got into the habit a long time ago to put that in the name
Image.16U.tiff
Image.16S.tiff
Image.F.tiff

the error you posted is for a tiff image error

what dose "file" tell you about the different images ?

tools like "photorec" require a lot of work on your part
and if the files were created by MS windows then they might be fragments

MicroBleeped is notorious for fragmenting files

in that case you will have to rejoin the parts
