Gigantic fonts KDE unusable
 

Fonts are Huge (at least 1/4 of screen height) in KDE and Enlightenment. in KDE all fonts are like this, enlightenment program title bars in Firefox, Gimp so forth.
Wierd thing is this is not so in XFCE everything is fine. Running slamd64 10.2 now, problem existed when running SuSe 10 as well.

You can run kcontrol from inside XFCE using a terminal window to issue the command (kcontrol). That will allow you to change the font size. Make sure that you press the 'Apply' button after you make the change.

same thing. right now no Qt/KDE on machine. Enlightenment, Fluxbox , TWM, all have the same problem. When opening programs such as Firefox, Gimp, etc all fonts in titles menus etc are enormous making then unusable. XFCE on the other hand doesn't have this problem. this is on two installations one of SuSE 10 w/KDE and this one of Slamd64 10.2 w/o KDE. Sorry should have clarified

I start laughing every time I read this thread; I have no idea why Enormous Fonts from Hell strikes me funny, but it does. This has got to be one of the weirdest problems I've ever heard of. Gigantic fonts across multiple distros??? The only common denominator is your hardware. Have you tried a different video card? Have you run memtest to verify your RAM? Can you try a different hard drive?

Before you scoff at these suggestions, I had a problem on my wife's computer last year where the Java plugin would fail in any web browser for certain java apps that worked fine on my computer sitting right across the table. Except for the disk drive, I swapped every device that plugs into the motherboard to no avail. I reloaded the OS (XP) twice, and eventually installed Fedora -- no help. I eventually replaced the motherboard -- no help. Finally, because it was literally the only thing left, I replaced the hard drive; voila! Problem solved. Not once was there an error message in any log about a disk failure.

I have no idea what your problem is, but I'm keenly interested in the ultimate solution. Please make sure and post it here.

I think jcliburn is on the right track. The next thing that I would investigate is whether there are any problems with the way the X system interracts with your video card. It always pays to look at the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and at its equivalent in the user directory. Since this problem reappears on different operating systems there are two possibilities. Either the problem is with the way that X interacts with your video card or there is something about the way that you install the X software. SuSE doesn't give you a lot of options about configuring X so that leaves your video card or with the way that your video card interracts with your monitor.

And, as jcliburn mentioned, it could be caused by something unexpected. I've tried to cover the most likely suspects.

Did you configure the visually impaired accessibility features? Now I'm really reaching because even a screen magnifier shouldn't make the characters large enough to fill the screen.

As jcliburn said, please keep us posted about your progress. If you do fix it then it would be interesting to know the solution. :)

ATi RS480 chipset Radeon xpress 200 + 64bit Linux = Major Font Problem except w/XFCE. 32bit works just peachy. Looks like a new MoBo and Video Card for me. Thanks for the replies!

I'd just stay with the 32 bit operating system. I don't believe that there is much of a performance difference between the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions as far as desktop machines are concerned.
