gFTP problems
 

My ISP is no help whatsoever... they don't support Linux. (How many times have I heard that!)

Anyway, maybe you guys can help.

I am trying to ftp some files to the ISP in order to post a web site. I am using gFTP--or trying to. The closest I have come to being successful is with the "passive" thing turned off in the gFTP gui. (I tried this based on another post here.) But even so, it gets to "PORT Command successful" and then it disconnects. With the "passive" thing turned on it appears to time out.

I am able to make an ftp connection to, say, ftp.slackware.org, so I know that gFTP is ok.

Also, when I go through (Mozilla) browser and type in the url (ftp.ptcnh.net) I get "530 Login incorrect" so it seems that I may have another setting somewhere else that is preventing me or maybe it's just that I need IE. (By the by... does IE work with Linux? I hope that's not a stupid question.)

Any suggestions?

nearly all ftp programs has some options call them and tell them that you use cuteftp as your ftp client and ask them for setup directions. they should tell you that way when you call for support never tell that you are using linux tell that you are using windows dont give them a chance to close the phone

I've worked tech support before, actually way too long and if they are good, they can smell a lie like a fart in a car.

I had many peeps try to call and they would just flat out lie, not admitting it but just by probing them, I would figure it out. This in turn only wastes both your time and the Tech Supports time and usually gets you no where.

So calling tech support and telling them your using cuteftp or any other program to FTP, probably won't matter as they can probably only give a best effort anyways on software that isn't theirs.

You should contact them and ask if they need any special options or instructions to FTP to their servers. Tell them your using Linux and don't expect support, but the program your using can FTP to other sites but not theirs.

Have you tried FTP'ing from the terminal or command line?

I have managed to get my files to the isp using command line and ftp. Unfortunately, my current problem is that the site--my home page--has some downloadable (or should be) original music. They are in .ogg format. When I open the page on line and click on one of them I get a page of jibberish instead of a download. The problem is either .ogg format or the fact that the files were ftp'd in binary mode. I am currently editing page to include a .wav file so that I can rule out the .ogg as being the problem. If the problem turns out to be the binary mode in ftp transfer then I need to know how to override and transfer in ascii mode. The man page for ftp has not helped me much.

I have figured out some of the ftp syntax and am getting closer to success. I have determined--or I think I have--that the ISP's server is not configured to know how to handle .ogg format.

Possibly, If this is a personal page supplied to you by your ISP. I know they will usually disable people from uploading mp3's. Are you able to even upload .ogg files ?

Not sure about the upload of .ogg, as I've already changed them to mp3. These are working fine. The ISP tech is brain dead, though. Can't seem to get any info from him about how to use my registered domain name. I provided the registrar with the primary and secondary DNS, per their request. I guess I thought they would be able to do something with that info, but still no luck on the domain name. Anyway, I am rambling and have moved on to another topic. I'm getting there. Thanks Kid.
