getting SSH commands to run as local

I have a monitorless system that I control through SSH. I would like commands that I run in SSH to stay running when I close the session. In some other cases some programs don't behave right if they are not run from local console. I have heard that there is a way to tunnel those commands into the local console. I would like to know how to do that.
Thanks in advance.

That is one powerful tool. Worked like a charm. Thanks a lot!
