Getting fedup of linux now!!

I had to reinstall Linux about 2 times roughly in the past week 3-4 times alone today! this is getting me vex man because when i first installed mandrake 9.2 everything worked fine sound card the lot then all of a sudden it stopped working an would only work with a different driver which was basically the same as the one it used before .. it plays the sons but no sound!! then when i try to use the original driver programs would not load that had to use that sound library then when in reinstall the same thing this time no sound at all like the first time not even the KDE welcome sound could be heard and i installed it just as i did the first time without alterations i tried almost everything to get it work and it still would and will not work on the original driver that it worked on before! i had to use a sub driver which worked fine for playing MP3s but not CDs and ever so often xmms would just stop playing my mp3s and would not load back up!

when i reinstalled the system again and installed a GUI for alsa all the menu options in KDE start menu disappeared and would not load back up even after rebooting i could not even get into mandrake control center once again i re installed and the same dyam thing happened again after updating the files age downloading patches and bug fixes .. this is getting to me now man cos this the first time this ever happened while using linux and what i really can't understand is WHY will not the dam sound work when it worked fine when i first installed 9.2!! can someone seriously explain this to me and why all of a sudden dose the programs just dissapre off the KDE menu!! and can't even click on Icons on the desktop to get it to load into the user area i even try booting into win ice and had the same dam thing happen their!! man people bad mouth Microsoft but at lest you guaranteed to find the right drivers for whatever hardware you have and install them hassle free! Mandrake need to get it's act together and start producing quilty and not quantity!!! or ill have to try another distro even doe people experience the same thing with them!! this is ridiculous man!!

Well this was the most incoherent rant I've heard. If I could find a question in all of those... words, I'd try and help. But to me it sounds like your problem is items "Magically" disappearing off of the KDE menu. So you re-installed a gajillion times. This isn't Windows, re-installing doesn't fix problems like menu items disappearing. Now, if you could paraphrase this into a question and not so much a rant, I'll give you all the support you need.

QUESTION

Why dose the KDE menu disapprear after i install and change all the menu icons into folders??? and then make some of the programs that was listed disappear

GT_Onizuka 02-15-2004 05:37 PM

Okay, now correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most things in the KDE menu Applications or Folders, so why would you be changing things into folders? Does the menu itself disappear or only some of the things inside it? If you change the location of the file that the menu points to, it won't appear on the menu anymore since it can't find it (e.g. if Firebird was in /usr/local/bin/MozillaFirebird/MozillaFirebird and you move it to /home/me/MozillaFirebird/MozillaFirebird, the KDE menu isn't going to know where it is, since you moved it from its original location). Am I understanding your question or not? I can't help but say I feel a little confused when I read your question.

have you tried using Gnome? maybe KDE doesn't suite your style.

Allen614 02-15-2004 05:55 PM

It's the keyboard. Bust it in a thousand pices and throw it out in the street. You'll feel much better,I always do.

WanabeLinus 02-15-2004 06:17 PM

First of all DON'T SCREW WITH THE MENU next there are several threads regarding menu problems here in this forum. Download the bug fix for disappearing menu items next open a terminal (you can use super user) type menudrake and as root reload user config then reload system menu then hit the SAVE button and see if that does it. As for your sound problem maybe it's as simple as your sounds are not enabled anymore in the control center check it under the system notification area then the more options button. DON'T GIVE UP YET :D

Hmm...is it me or are linux folks adverse to grammar rules? :)

Punctuation: end sentences with a period (.) before starting the next.
Layout: use a new paragraph when talking about a seperate topic.

The original rant in this post is a perfect example...of how not to write. <g>

I guess so much of the brain cycles are going towards Linux "problem" solving that the grammar is suffering?

(I couldn't refrain from commenting; sorry)

I'd agree with the idea of dropping KDE. I understand that it looks cute and everything, but it's too heavy and too buggy yet. If you want/need a windows like style to feel more "home", icewm is great and fast (but not as near as good looking as KDE). If you want a really GREAT lightweight desktop environment, XFCE rocks. It's very nice, very functional and works similar to CDE, used intensively under the good Solaris...
Also, remember, Linux, unlike Windows, will only get broken when you brake it. Nothing runs or updates or disappears unless you do that...

SciYro 02-15-2004 07:26 PM

...or unless you isntalled a program to do that (wich defeats the purpose for people to stay with linux in the first palce), now, as that grammer thing I DONT WANT TO LEARN,!!! ITS NOT SCHOOL. sencond, icewm is not as fast as you might think, its a bit choppy on my 233mhz laptop (so if somthing claims to be fast and good and i cant run it fast, then its not fast!!!, i think ude works nice (i dont use any of the desktop thingy cuse iether it has stuff i dont want it to do, or is just pain to big), if you go seach for window managers and whatnot youll find about 30 or so for linux, (snece you can run KDE i think you can run bigger programs), mybe enlightenment will work for you)

well can anyone tell me how to fix this KDE problem i start to load into it and when the screen appear showing that its loading the desktop it gets to the part where it says loading the panel.

then it just sits their as a blue screen and don't do anything can you tell me how i can boot into icewm so i can try an sort it from their.. or any other method advisable ..

oh i forgot my current setting to login into linux is set to automatically log me in... maybe their is a way to disable it using the command lines etc so i can get into icewm???

and for those who want keep their rude comment to them selves back off thanks.

ps i happen to like the look of KDE Gnome is okay but not very appealing to me maybe ill use it later on down the line

Well, you know the saying about first impressions being everything? Well, people (human nature) judge people instantly by how they dress, look, act, talk and behave. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I can only judge you by what you type and your Handle. I don't know what your Handle is from so that's a no go, and you type with the intelligence of a three year-old. I'm going to tell you this. Generally, it is frowned upon to type with incorrect grammar, "h4x0rin6 with l337", or typing in all Caps, because it makes you look like a retard. I don't want this to turn into a flamewar, I don't want to argue with anyone, but the point I'm trying to get here is, no one on the internet (except maybe 12 year-olds in AOL chatrooms) is going to give you the time of day if you talk like an incoherent drug addict. I know I typed similar to you awhile ago, and I learned that not only does typing correctly all the time make people respect me more, but it also makes writing school papers easier ;). Once again, this isn't meant for a flame (although it does have its fair share of negativity, which I do apologize for, I just want the point to get across). </rant>

When it presents you with the login screen, is there something called 'Sessions' or something to that affect? When I had Red Hat installed, I could click a button called sessions and change my default WM from there, give that a whirl. The other way to go about it (that I know of) is to change you runlevel to 3 (so you boot into the Command Line) and then startx with you .xinitrc file havine icewm& in it. I'm pretty sure there is a way to change it from the Graphical Login, so check that first. If it doesn't work for you, I'll try and explain it thouroughly the other way.

While it's loading - Alt+ Ctrl+Backspace should kill the Xserver and give you a terminal prompt.
