Hey everyone, I recently updated everything on my gentoo box using emerge world and emerge system and updated all the config files. Now when I start X, the screen goes black and the HD light blinks like crazy. Nothing happens, but I can kill it and go back to bash with ctrl-alt-backspace. I've done this whole update process before and it's been fine. anybody have any ideas of where to start? I'm still pretty new to Linux...
well if you're starting from no info at all, then your first stop is to look into /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors. look for any lines beginning "(EE)" among others....if you're not seeing anything you believe to be relevant, post the last dozen or so lines, and we'll see if it seems useful or not.
ok, i was talking with a friend and I unmerged X, KDE and GNOME. it's currently re-emerging everything, which will take some time (it's a dual celeron 366). I did check out the file and there were no errors, but I will post here again and update after the compiling is done. Thanks a bunch.
