gentoo file manager

distro: arch linux current
software: gentoo file manager
problem: cannot get automounting to work. it is enabled in preferences, yet does nothing at all. when starting gentoo from a terminal i get the following output:

** WARNING **: Couldn't initialize mount data - automounting won't work

although the app works flawlessly with the exception of automount. is there anything special i have to do to be able to mount a cdrom drive just by browsing to it? i am almost positive there wasn't anything special that needed to be done when i was on slackware...
