generic printing software

i am new with linux.
i need printing software that basicly asks for the doc, then you select the port and it prints without installing the printer. im a printer tech and work on numerous types and models of printers and it would be a pain to have to install every printer i need to test. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Or is there anything to emulate the software i am running on WinXP. I am running a dual boot system using suse 9.1

does the docs you're going to print already in their native command eg. ESC-P for Epson? if it does you can just redirect the docs to /dev/lp0 (in case you're using LPT1), just do:

#cat mydoc.prn > /dev/lp0

I'm sorry I can't help with USB printers...

well at this time im not sure what software im going to use to do my printing. i have openoffice 1.1.1. the setup i have now with windows is Q&A report writer software (old Dos based) with this software you open or create your doc and hit F2 then select the port lpt 1-3, com 1-3. no usb. that would be the ideal situation for the linux setup also. i have tried to set wine up to run the Q&A software, but i really dont know what im doing. i ve just taken this as a learning process.

thanks for the reply
