general software install questions

hi. i just picked up mandrake linux 8.2. whenever i download something i can not install it. i have tried using the software installer. i also read the readme files and i tried to install through the terminal. it keeps giving me a message - command not valid -. is there something i'm missing? when i try to install through the software installer it wont let me add a source - it keeps telling me
-an error occured while adding this source- and i dont know what relative path to synthesis or hdlist is. i have created a directory on my hd where i direct my downloads and save to my hard drive.

can someone point me to a website with this basic info or give me some direction?

Mandrake ROCKS!

Ok, so onto your problem kind sir.

This depend on what kind of software it is, and how it's packaged. You might wanna try clickin on one of the helpful links in my sig, or checking out the tutorial on www.linux.org

As for a "quick" answer for ya:

For RPM files (these are all in terminal, as root user):
rpm -ivh /path/to/file/filename.rpm

For tar.gz files:
tar xvzf /path/to/file/filename.tar.gz

Then enter the new directory:
cd /path/to/filename/filename

And run the configure script if there is one, or read the README and INSTALL files:
vi README or
vi INSTALL

Anyway, after ./configure run:
make
make install

This will usually get things rolling. The thing is though, you need the "development" packages installed. Go ahead and get them installed if you didn't already.

HTH

Cool

and

./configure
make
make install

== ./configure && make && make install
(don't have to wait until each one finishes)
