GDM stopped allowing two users to log in - Linux Mint Daryna

I'm running Linux Mint Daryna on an Inspiron 1420, C2D w/2 GB RAM and Intel wireless/gfx. Installed fine and worked perfectly, up until the point where I changed the permissions as root on one of two normal accounts' home folders, such that the folder could be read and written to by anyone. After doing this, I logged out of the root account and attempted to log into the other normal user account; but after typing in the username and password, the entry field 'blinked' (best visual description I can give) and went back to asking me for my username again.
I can log into either account from the command line and start the X server (after removing /tmp/.x0-lock), but GDM refuses to log the two normal users in. I can still log in as root, and a user account I've created since logs in without any trouble. Has anyone here ever had this kind of problem before, or would know hot to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

The program that configures who gdm allows to log in and who is blocked from logging in is called gdmsetup. Log in as root and start gdmsetup from the command line. Click on the users tab and you may be able to straighten things out there.

I tried changing the permissions and users in gdmsetup several different ways, but the same problem still occurs.

Any other ideas?
