GDM+FluxBox+autologin kills X11 startup

I'm trying to set up a minimum footprint Linux box with a window manager that's based on Ubuntu 12.04 i386 server. I've installed the core OS and GDM and Fluxbox and when I reboot, the GDM greeter comes up and I'm able to log in and get to a Fluxbox desktop.

I'd like to set the machine up to auto-login, so I create /etc/gdm/custom.conf (chmod 644) with the following:

Code:
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=cweiss
However, when I reboot with this in place, the machine doesn't launch the window manager - it just sits at the boot text screen. It's still a live system, I can open another console and log in.

Any ideas what I'm missing here?

I'm not familiar with GDM, but my Notes say this is how I did it on my Slackware system
Quote:
qAutomaticLoginOfUser
This works with xfce and fluxbox, just set it to start automatically
As root, in /etc/rc.d/rc.local add the line below (g is username)
su - g -c startx
Doing this causes some problems, notably with apps using java
Starting them as user, they will be unable to find java, unless you
add the line "export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/java" to "/etc/profile", and
include the line ". /etc/profile" in $HOME/.bashrc (create file if necessary)
