gcc installation error fails sanity check

when try to do ./configure for gcc 4.2.2 get the following

checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.

however version 3.6 is installed and i can compile with it.

then i try to install libstdc++ with ./configure and get the following

checking how to run the C preprocessor... /lib/cpp
configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
See `config.log' for more details.

Here are the last lines of the log. Let me know if you need more,

thanks a bunch

Try 'gcc-config -l' to see which gcc versions you have installed and select different one with something like 'gcc-config i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.2.2' where i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.2.2 is your gcc profile.
