Angry gcc

I wanted to install Mplayer so I had to upgrade gcc 2.96 to 3.x.x
I have downloaded a gcc-3.0.4.tar.gz file . When I write
tar -zxvf gcc-3.0.4.tar.gz I get a whole page of errors ,each line
ends with something like that
"Can't change the owner on uid 501 , gid 501: Forbidden operation". So I dowloaded gcc-3.0.3.tar.gz
The same error ocurs when I type tar -zxvf gcc-3.0.3.tar.gz
Can I install gcc from rpm file?

yes, you can install the gcc3 rpms from the mandarke cd's no problem

incidentally your problem is presumably because you are trying to decompress the file into a directory you do not have permission to access, it is certainly nothign to do with the file itself.

tar -zxvf gcc-3.1.1.tar.gz file is mormally extracted but after some time I get something like this:
"gzip : stdin: Unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF in file
tar: Unexpected EOF in file
tar : Erorr which can't be fixed :end"

What now?

Re-download ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/gcc/gcc-3.1.1/ , and check the md5sum on the download, there's an md5.sum file just check the sum with md5sum utility the strings must match up
