gcc 2.96 on x86_64

Dear all

I am trying to install gcc 2.96 for x86_64 in non standard location ( /data/gcc/2.96 ) . Source RPM tried is "compat-gcc-7.3-2.96.122.src.rpm".

OS release: RHEL WS release 3 (Taroon Update 2)
Kernel version: 2.4.21-15.EL.IT39062smp x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

./configure runs well but make comes out with the following error.

-------------------------
configure.in:420: m4: ERROR: Recursion limit of 1024 exceeded, use -L<N> to change it
autom4te: m4 failed with exit status: 1
autoheader: /usr/bin/autom4te failed with exit status: 1
make[1]: *** [cstamp-h.in] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/gcc/gcc-2.96-20000731/gcc'
make: *** [all-gcc] Error 2
--------------------------

Did google search and tried the following steps under the source directory.

$ contrib/gcc_update --touch

and ran make again and got a error as below.
-------------------------
Created `objc/Makefile'.
creating libintl.h
gcc -c -DIN_GCC -g -O2 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I./config -I./../include ./config//.c
gcc: ./config//.c: No such file or directory
gcc: no input files
make[1]: *** [cppmain.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/gcc/gcc-2.96-20000731/gcc'
make: *** [all-gcc] Error 2
---------------------------
Any suggestions on getting 2.96 gcc working with x86_64 ? Pl help as it's with me for a week now.

TIA

All

I tried changing the /usr/bin/autom4te value by doing a $ m4 -L 2048 as the ./configure error suggested with no luck ( m4 just hangs with no response ).

If I have to regenerate the configure.in using autoconf-2.13 , will the below do it ? For me , it only emptied the file.

$ autoconf-2.13 configure.in > configure.new

Dear all
The problem resolved by using a pre compiled gcc version 2.96 ( pre installed with RHEL WS U2 x86_64) -/usr/bin/gcc296 .

still, pl help if somebody was successful in getting gcc 2.96 installed for a x86_64 .

Thanks
