Gamepads under linux

Does anyone have any advice on getting gamepads to work under linux? I have a Wimgman gamepad (Has both USB and gameport connectors), and want to install it under lMandrake 8.1 I have absolutely no clue how to do so. A search on google revealed a few sites that all recommended upgrading the kernel to 2.4 (so they were a bit dated), does anyone have any recent experiences with setting up gamepads under linux?

hello,
sure do,
teh USB one for me was very easy under the 2.4.x kernel, it was plug & play with my gravis, do a usbview to check it out, you can also so a jstest, if it is hooked up to a gameport on a sound card load the needed modules, e.g. gameport, the module for you wingman and the do a jstest, it should be up and running at that point.

Do I need to recompile the kernel or something?

[root@rrenaud rob]# usbview
bash: usbview: command not found
