game programming
Hey everyone, well I am delving into the world of 3D games. I want to know what 3D engine to use. I was looking at panard vision and crystal space. They seem to be good and the programming won't be a problem. However compatibility is tough.
First, I need to be able to move/tweak this to compile it on windows. Also, on Linux, I want to be able to run it on a box without X11 if possible. Second, I have MilkShape 3D for windows, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a file format I can put my objects in that the engine will read. Third, AFAIK, I can use quake maps directly or converted depending on the engine so I need a good program to make it. I have worldcraft and was wondering if that was good enough? TIA, rootman147 out! |
I don't know any 3D engine for Linux not using X.

Gee, mara thanks...for that completely useless piece of trivia.

There may be an answer in evading X in 'wineX', which I have heard is the open source port of DirextX; I can't speak authoritivly on this however as I am only now looking into the wine libs myself. So you should consider this last to be a suggested avenue of investigation rather than a solution. Verbal |
thx verbal, worst comes to worst, I'll use X, I am using Linux just for production.

some of my friends an I have been tossing ideas back and forth about making a 3D rpg/shooter.
i stumbled across a decent engine that is open source. i belive the link is crystal.sourceforge.net also, i have heard that the quake 2 and 3 engine source code has not only been released but works on multiple platforms. i have not confirmed this |

if you were actually going to be playing the game in linux i would try to avoid WineX
my understanding of it is that it does not support networking. and so, if you were wanting to have a lan, and someone was using linux... well, you get the idea |
