gaim0.74 cannot see yahoo buddies online status

hi,
I had installed Gaim 0.74 for quiet some time without knowing that i cannot see my online buddies and vice versa. I always thought they were offline!. Turns out they were mostly online but i couldnt see their status nor they could see mine!

Gaim yahoo connects successfully...but i guess i've no plugin which checks the online status.

heres my GAIM yahoo profile..
Redhat 9
gaim 0.74
- pager host : scs.yahoo.com (when changing this to scs.msg.yahoo.com, ERROR incorrect password, signing off)
- pager post : 5050
- proxy options : Use global proxy settings.

please advice..thanks.

I had this exact same error - I changed it to scs.msg.yahoo.com and half the time I got an error, the other half I got on OK.

Now you can get on with the traditional method, but you can't see buddies which are using the different login server than you - you both have to be on the same, either scs.yahoo.com or scs.msg.yahoo.com. Most people tend to automatically update to the newer versions anyway.

Have you tried to specify an alias at all? That won't work with Yahoo, but the best solution is to upgrade to 0.75 which automatically updates the new protocols. http://gaim.sourceforge.net

Hope it helps.

yeah thats what i thought 2.
i've download 0.75 but now there is a problem with dependencies. managed to get gtkspell-2.0.2 and now trying to download libtk8.3.so . this is what it says:

warning: gaim-0.75-0rh9.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 883c1c14
error: Failed dependencies:
libtk8.3.so is needed by gaim-0.75-0rh9

after that i would be able to tell you whether its working or not.
thanks for the help.

Unhappy

I'm afraid I don't know how the packaging system in redhat works as I've only ever tried debian and slackware.

looks like you are using a redhat-specific version of GAIM (again I don't know quite how Redhat works - still fairly new to linux in general), but I downloaded the tarball version for slack 9.1 and that worked OK for me.

Again I don't know quite what effect that would have on Redhat - someone on here may advise tomtry it, or even advise against it, I'm afraid I just don't know.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

i m thinking to forget gaim..causing too many headaches. is there anyother version of IM which supports YAHOO and also which has OFFLINE messaging feature available.

is GAIM in the top of the list when compared to other IM programs. (specifically speaking for only yahoo).

Always happy to help! I investigated Yahoo for linux a while ago but couldn't find one compatible with Slackware, so I forgot about that

Hi,
Thats a very nice piece of information there. I had the same problem, but couldnt guess why my buddies were shown offline, now i know the reason. There is a catch here...in gaim 0.74, usually you cannot connect to yahoo with scs.yahoo.com, you will have to change it to scs.msg.yahoo.com to get online. (This is there in the gaim FAQ:http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq.php#q58 )

This is solved with the new gaim 0.75 which automatically updates the server to scs.msg.yahoo.com.

I have a new problem here, when i updated from 0.74 to 0.75, i am not able to connect at all...it says "Your account is deactivated" !!! I dont know what that means, i am able to connect to yahoo from a XP machine. I am guessing it is the profile that is causing the problem, i think by deleting theextra profile this will be solved.

Coming to yahoo messenger for linux, too bad it doesnt have socks support, so i cant use it. I'm presently working on runsocks to get yahoo working

A piece of advice *DONT EVER MENTION ALIAS IN YAHOO*

Cheers
