I had something very similar to this a while back. However, it sounds like you could have a few different problems. I might be tripping myself up a bit, but I think if I just explain what I did for each, they might help you.
First of all, check the gaim website (I'm a new member here, so I can't post links until my 4th post). I know they have information about people having different problems in their FAQ section, and they provide some insight on how to solve them.
With Yahoo, you might have something similar to the problem they mention about MSN, and that is ssl support. I might be wrong, but I know that it is probably a good idea to have Mozilla NSS installed correctly. I did this by searching around for an RPM; again, I did this a while ago.
The entire summary of the stuff I mentioned above is to just go to the gaim website and have a look around.
The other problem you might be having is with the proxy; I noticed you mentioned it in your post. It could be, if you are trying to connect at work, that your company's firewall is blocking the port you are trying to use. If that is the case, you should try a different port. I had this issue at an old client, I eventually found out if I changed the port, that I could get out.
I hope this helps, good luck.
