GAIM in SuSE 9.1
 

I am using SuSE 9.1, and have decided that I hate Kopete...well not hate, but I am really used to GAIM. I found the proper RPM package (from a link on this site), and installed it with YaST fine...there were no failed dependencies...but when I go to run GAIM, it acts like it is loading, and then doesnt.

If someone could help me figure this out...I would much prefer to use GAIM...

Being a Suse 9.1 user myself, I too loathe Kopete.
I'm using gaim.

He's got a few dependancies that need to be taken care of, but he's got all the packages on his site.
standard rpm -ivh %package is all I needed.

I downloaded those packages and the SuSE RPM, and installed them all fine.

Unfortunately when i try to run the program (in shell), I get three dependency errors..

gtkspell
libaspell.so.15
libgtkspell.so.0

I got the first one fine, but it won't let me install it, apparently it's dependent on libaspell.so.15

Oh, I also use SuSE 9.1 Personal...sorry I thought I had mentioned that, I am unaware if that makes a differenence....

Have you thought about downloading amsn. It is an MSN Messenger Clone and it even supports display pics, with future planned support for audio and webcams.

Anyways, I prefer it over Gaim, it is way better for MSN in my opinion than Gaim.

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread, because I've just installed SuSE 9.1 Personal and GAIM is on my list of "things to do"!

Has anyone managed to resolve this and do they remember exactly how?

It is not clear to me if you were able to install these packages?

If not, GAIM will not execute properly if you do not have them installed.

When you try to install any package with YaST, take note of any dependecies they (gtkspell ,libaspell.so.15 , libgtkspell.so.0) may have and install their dependencies first.

I know there are a *million* dependencies that GAIM has when you try to install it with SuSE. Therefore, I have always stuck with kopete.

You need to find a different RPM. This is a problem with Gaim I'm afraid. The fix is simple enough but they haven't done it so far.

Weird.. Apparently Suse 9.1 installs different packages by default.

Okay, looks like ya'll need these two packages:
aspell-0.50.3-91.i586.rpm
gtkspell-2.0.4-103.i586.rpm

Newer versions should be just fine.
My only caution is this: I haven't checked what the dependancies on that are.

My recomendation, get Red-Carpet for installs (Yeah, I know I'll catch flack for this, sorry but it's easy for me)

Head over to ftp://ftp.ximian.com/pub/redcarpet2/suse-91-i586/
Get these packages:
libredcarpet-2.4.0-0.ximian.9.2.i586.rpm
libredcarpet-tools-2.4.0-0.ximian.9.2.i586.rpm
libredcarpet-python-2.4.0-0.ximian.9.2.i586.rpm
rcd-2.4.0-0.ximian.9.4.i586.rpm
red-carpet-2.4.0-0.ximian.9.2.i586.rpm
rug-2.4.0-0.ximian.9.2.i586.rpm

That should cover what you need.
Open up a shell, and type sux and type in your root password. (this is similar to a su -, however it allows for Xwindows to work correctly. It's a weird Suse thing)

Now, install your packages via the standard rpm -ivh %packagename

Now that you've got it installed, type red-carpet in the window.
In the application that comes up, go up to "Edit" then "Channel subscriptions" and subscribe to suse-91-i586 (you can subscribe to other chanels too, but that's not important to what we're doing)

Hit close, then go to the "available software" tab.
In the search field, type "gtkspell" and let look.
It should find gtkspell-2.0.5-53 or something like that
Highlight it, and click "Mark for installation"

Repeat for aspell.

Once you're done, go to the upper left corner, and click the "Run Now" button.

That should install your packages, and allow you to install GAIM.

Heh.. Being a hardcore linux n00b myself, I find it's helpful for what I call "dependancy hell"
When you get into a situation where you're just going to get package after package after package just to install something you want.

It's just a nice way to do it.
As a side benefit, it tracks security updates for you. It's handy for me because I don't know which security patches apply to me or not.

I compare it to "windows update" for Linux. (Yes, I know there's a huge difference, but it's just a description)

Too bad urpmi doesn't come with suse. Hell of a lot easier than searching and searching till you get everything right.

I'll definately get that,... Dependency hell has been a problem..

I started with Fedora 2, and ran into way too many dependency issues that I just deleted the thing

You do realize a simple

yum install gaim

in Fedora 2 would have downloaded Gaim for you and installed it and all of its dependancies in Fedora, right?
