Hi.
I'm a complete noob when it comes to linux, i've only installed it on my comp last night.
I've pretty much installed everything i needed on it, but i've come across a problem with GAIM that boggles me.

When i first logged in, i used my msn account, and it logged in fine. i could even see active contacts and all.
However, when i added my yahoo acc, before it could connect, it crashed..
It's been doing it ever since - no error message and no nothing - i can just see it for a brief second, trying to connect, and then it's gone.

Any ideas how to fix it?

And one more question: i'm looking for a good media player - i've already installed xmms and the mp3 encoder to play my mp3 files, but now i'm looking for a versatile video player, hopefully one that can also play wmv files. Any recommendations?

Welcome to LQ.org. The Gaim you are using, is the one that came with RH 9 CD's? If it is, I'm quite impressed that it worked with MSN, because: 1 - Redhat 9.0 is very old and 2 - Microsoft changes protocols all the time exactly to try to stop third part messengers as gaim.

Anyway, open a terminal and type gaim. It's good to open a program from the terminal for debugging. When it crashes, it should leave some "tracks" of why it crashed. Post them here, as well as the version of gaim you are using.

For media player, give mplayer a shot:

Search this forum for easier ways to install mplayer on Redhat. I am sure I've answered a similar question not more then a couple of days ago.
