Good question, lol.. My gaim did the same thing after I blocked a user the other day; it crashed, and now no longer works. Won't start or anything, it goes through the sign-on junk, and as soon as it would be connected, *poof* it's gone, closed.
An easy solution: Use Kopete, if there's a version for Fedora/Gnome. It's great, and seems better constructed.
Gaim has seemed buggy at the best of times.
